A man in Italy is facing manslaughter charges after he reportedly jumped from a building in a suicide attempt and accidentally killed a woman below.
The victim has been identified as 83-year-old Francesca Manno.
Emergency services went to a residence in Milan, Italy, on Sunday, Sept. 14, and pronounced Manno dead, according to Rai News, Il Post and Il Mattino, as well as the Italian news agency Ansa.
The investigation found that Manno died when a 70-year-old man who lived in her building jumped from his balcony in an apparent suicide attempt. The man fell from the fourth floor into the courtyard where Manno was walking, the outlets reported.
At first, authorities thought it might have been a double-suicide, but it became clear that Manno was not connected to the man. He survived the fall and was hospitalized with multiple leg fractures, Corriere della Sera reported. His name has not been released by Italian media.
Local authorities have charged the man with manslaughter, according to Rai News, ANSA and Corriere della Sera.
Manno lived in the building with her husband, a woman who knew her for 50 years told Rai News. She rarely left her home.
She was hit head-on, and the impact was extremely violent, reports said. Her autopsy is expected in the next few days, according to ANSA.
