A Colorado driver has pleaded guilty to causing the 2024 crash that killed a police officer in Golden, Colorado.

Stephen Geer entered a guilty plea on Tuesday, Oct. 14, to Vehicular Homicide – DUI in connection with the death of Golden police officer Evan Dunn, as well as Vehicular Assault – DUI, according to a statement from the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

On Nov. 6, 2024, Officer Dunn and another officer were responding to a crash on Highway 58 when they were struck by Geer’s vehicle. Dunn was killed, and the other officer sustained serious injuries. Two civilians were also hurt in the incident, prosecutors said.

Under a plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to dismiss one felony and two misdemeanor charges on the condition that Geer serve between 4 and 18 years in prison. The agreement ensures that Geer will not be eligible for probation, even though he could have qualified if convicted at trial.

“This stipulation reflects the parties’ acknowledgement that a prison sentence is the only appropriate outcome in this case,” the release stated.

Geer remains free on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 21, 2026, according to 9News.

“The loss of Officer Dunn has struck the Golden Police Department and the entire community deeply,” the City of Golden said following his death. “Officer Dunn, 33, brought a wealth of experience and dedication to his role, having previously served as an Army Aviation Officer and Blackhawk pilot.”

He is survived by his wife, their dog, and his parents and siblings.

“As the Golden community mourns the loss of Officer Dunn, his legacy of dedication, kindness, and courage will not be forgotten,” the city said.
