A man’s comment about his girlfriend’s work responsibilities led to a tense argument about respect and apology.

The 30-year-old man shared his story on Reddit’sAm I the A——?” forum, explaining that his 28-year-old girlfriend felt insulted by his remark about her job.

“Part of my girlfriend’s job requires her to generate some files via script and transfer them,” he wrote. “I’ve noticed that she runs a script in terminal and then copies the generated file to another location manually.”

He admitted that he made a teasing comment about her process: “As a banter I told her, ‘You are only doing copy-paste, this can be automated.’”

However, his girlfriend didn’t find it funny. “She took it as an insult,” he said, recalling that she responded by saying, “You don’t understand what I do,” before calling him “stupid” and “illiterate” in another language.

Now, the couple is at a standstill. “She is saying I insulted her first so I should apologize,” he continued. “I’m saying I didn’t mean to demean her work and she called me ‘stupid/illiterate’ so she should apologize.”

Commenters on Reddit largely sided with the girlfriend, arguing that the boyfriend was in the wrong for belittling her work.

“You did insult her first, and you should apologize,” one user wrote. “You minimized her work and said it could be automated, then continued when it was clear she didn’t like it. That’s an a—— move.”

Another commenter agreed, adding, “She doesn’t owe you an apology — you knew you were winding her up and continued anyway.”
