McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme’s partnership has officially ended, with the former discontinuing the sale of the latter’s doughnuts next month
McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme have officially ended their partnership following what both companies described as “careful consideration,” according to NBC News. The move also marks the end of a broader plan to offer Krispy Kreme doughnuts at all McDonald’s locations across the United States.
Why the Partnership Was Called Off
The collaboration was first announced in March of last year and began rolling out just over six months ago. By March 30, Krispy Kreme doughnuts were available in nearly 2,400 McDonald’s locations across the U.S.
However, in May, Krispy Kreme paused the rollout, citing the need to reevaluate its strategy to improve sales performance. Now, both companies have confirmed the partnership will officially conclude on July 2.
In a joint statement, the companies said it quickly became clear that their shared plan was not sustainable. While the initiative met McDonald’s quality standards, the economics didn’t work out for Krispy Kreme.
“We were excited and pleased to partner with Krispy Kreme and deliver a high-quality product to our customers,” said Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald’s U.S. Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer.
“But it also needed to be a profitable business model for Krispy Kreme,” she added.
Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth echoed the sentiment, explaining that although the trial offered a strong customer experience, their attempts to align costs with in-store demand ultimately fell short.
“That made the partnership unsustainable for us,” Charlesworth said.
Financial Pressures for Both Brands
Both McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme have faced economic challenges recently. McDonald’s, which operates about 13,500 U.S. locations, has struggled to retain low- and middle-income consumers despite introducing value-based promotions. Rising inflation has impacted spending patterns across the fast-food industry.
