A Tennessee mother is facing charges after her two young children were hospitalized when they reportedly consumed her THC gummies, according to authorities.
Candice Hickson, 43, was booked into the Gibson County jail on Nov. 30, WBBJ-TV reported.
Deputies with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 300 block of Trenton Highway on Nov. 28 after a caller said her children had eaten an unknown amount of her THCA gummies, which had been stored in her bathroom, according to an affidavit obtained by the station.
When deputies arrived, they found the two children — ages 2 and 4 — unresponsive.
Hickson told deputies that “when she went into the bathroom, her children were able to reach her THCA product,” the affidavit stated, per WBBJ-TV.
The children were transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital for treatment, according to WMC/Gray News and WBBJ-TV.
They were treated and released within 48 hours, according to WBBJ-TV and a press release from Tennessee District Attorney General Frederick H. Agee of the 28th Judicial District, cited by ABC News.
According to Gibson County online records, Hickson has been charged with child abuse/neglect/endangerment. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 16.
Both children were placed in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services after Hickson failed a drug test for methamphetamine, ABC News reported, citing the press release.
“Our Office will prosecute this case within the letter of the law, balancing the need to help Ms. Hickson get treatment for her addiction, so that she can eventually reunite with her children in a safe environment,” Agee said in a press statement, per ABC News.
