A 45-year-old mom got the surprise of her life while on vacation in Canada with her family — she gave birth in her hotel bathroom without even knowing she was pregnant.

Helen Green had just arrived in Toronto on May 21 with her husband Michael and their 6-year-old daughter, Darcy, when she suddenly began experiencing severe stomach pain late at night, she told SWNS.

Around 1:45 a.m., while in the hotel’s ensuite bathroom, Helen’s “body just took over” and she unexpectedly delivered a baby girl.

“I had no idea what was happening,” Helen said. “After two massive pushes, there was a baby. I picked her up out of the loo and held her in my arms.”

At first, Michael thought the newborn cries were coming from another room. But when he walked in and saw his wife holding a baby, he was stunned.

“I was in such a daze, we could hardly work out what was going on,” said Michael, also 45.

He quickly called 911, and paramedics rushed both mom and baby to the hospital.

“We didn’t know if the baby was healthy or even full term,” Michael recalled. “We didn’t check if it was a boy or girl — a paramedic told us.”

The baby, born weighing 8 lbs., 3 oz., was perfectly healthy. The couple named her Olivia.

“This was such a huge shock, and also such a lovely surprise,” Helen told SWNS. “She just came along, and it feels like she’s always been with us.”

Helen, who also has an 18-year-old son named Harry, had suffered several miscarriages after giving birth to Darcy. She explained that during this unexpected pregnancy she had no symptoms, continued to have regular periods, and even went to the gym four times a week. Unlike her previous pregnancies, she didn’t develop a baby bump.

Despite the happy surprise, traveling back home to the U.K. was difficult. The family had to stay in Canada longer than planned while waiting for Olivia’s birth certificate and passport.

“Registering her birth was a nightmare,” Helen said. “All we had were discharge papers from the hospital.”

Still, they made the most of their extended stay, visiting Niagara Falls twice and attending three baseball games.

Finally, on June 25, more than a month after Olivia’s sudden arrival, the Greens flew back to England. The unplanned costs of hospital care, hotels, and other expenses added more than $12,000 to their trip, though they hope travel insurance will cover it.

In the end, Helen says the only thing that really matters is that their family is home together.

“Getting your head around having a baby is hard, but it’s something else when you didn’t know you were pregnant,” she said. “Within a few days, it just started to feel normal — and such a joy.”
