A mother says she dropped nearly 60 pounds in just four months after cutting out her favorite food — a decision sparked by a life-changing diagnosis.
Lucy Castle, 41, a self-described “busy mom” of three boys aged 2, 9, and 15, says she realized she needed a serious lifestyle change after she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. “That was my wake-up call,” she said, according to Daily Mail.
Before her diagnosis, Lucy’s eating habits centered around convenience. “I used to find the quickest, easiest option,” she explained. That often meant grabbing French bread, cheese, chips, and chocolates — whatever was easy to eat while chasing after her kids. When she had time for a sit-down meal, she’d top everything with grated cheese.

“Cheese was wrecking my life,” she admitted. “My favorite was brie.”
According to Verywell Health, just 1 ounce of brie — about the size of a thumb — packs nearly 100 calories and is high in sodium and fat.
Lucy, who lives in Leicestershire, England, said her health began to decline after the birth of her youngest child. “I wasn’t feeling well. I was dizzy. I had pins and needles,” she recalled. Her self-esteem plummeted as her weight climbed past 220 lbs. “I used to avoid social events, hide away in baggy clothes, and I couldn’t keep up with my boys.”
Type 2 diabetes, unlike type 1, is often linked to lifestyle and diet — particularly those high in processed foods and saturated fats. It occurs when the body can no longer properly regulate blood sugar. While there’s no cure, the condition can be managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and monitoring.
Following her diagnosis, Lucy committed to a strict diet. She gave up cheese entirely and turned to premade meal replacements, such as soups and shakes. The results were almost immediate.

“Seeing the scales go down every week — it kept me motivated,” she said. In just four months, she lost nearly 60 pounds.
These days, she focuses on homemade meals like chicken stir fry and says she’s rediscovered her confidence. “For the first time in years, I now love shopping for clothes that make me feel amazing.”

Lucy has also taken her journey a step further, launching a new career as a wellness coach. Her message is one of encouragement and self-compassion: “You can do this too. Take it one day at a time, stop being hard on yourself, and practice self-love.”
“It’s not just about losing weight,” she added. “It’s about finding yourself again.”
