A mother of four has been missing for six weeks, and her worried family is growing increasingly desperate for information.

“She has never, ever disappeared before. She has never not tried to reach out to family,” says her mother, Sharonda Muller, speaking about her 32-year-old daughter, Kamela Johnson, who was last seen in Jacksonville, Fla., on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Her children are “asking questions” and “we don’t have the answers for them,” Muller adds.

More than 40 days have passed since Johnson was last seen by her husband, Darrell Johnson, on that Wednesday evening. According to a Nov. 1 incident report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, she was likely heading to Gate, a gas station at 5508 Moncrief Road, where he said she normally spends time.

Darrell reported Kamela missing just over a week later, on Oct. 16. Family members later told officials that she struggled with substance use and would often spend time at “notorious drug locations,” according to the report.

By Nov. 1, Kamela’s ex-boyfriend, Jeremy Womack, also filed a missing persons report after realizing he hadn’t heard from her since around Oct. 8. He became alarmed when he received text messages on Oct. 16 from an unfamiliar number claiming to be Kamela. When he responded asking who was really sending the messages, he never received a reply, the report states.

Womack then reached out to Darrell and learned that he also hadn’t heard from Kamela and had already contacted authorities, according to the sheriff’s office report.

“The husband said she just walked out the house and said she’ll be back, and he’s never seen her again,” Muller says, noting she is unsure about the exact timeline of events on Oct. 8. “The longtime friend said … he dropped her off at a gas station in the neighborhood.”

According to the incident report, an officer spoke with customers at the gas station where Kamela is believed to have last been seen. One person reported seeing her at Gate “about a week ago” but couldn’t recall the specific day. Other regulars said they hadn’t seen her in about two weeks. No additional information about Kamela’s whereabouts emerged from those interviews.

Investigators also traced the unfamiliar phone number that had sent messages to Womack. It was linked to two different individuals “who appear to have no connection to Kamela,” according to the report.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirms that Kamela remained missing as of Tuesday, Nov. 18.

“As far as the local police, because she is an adult and she didn’t have any issues with mental illness, they’re basically just saying that she has free will,” says Muller, who is now caring for Kamela’s children, ages 6 to 11.

Although Kamela would occasionally be gone for a couple of days, she always checked in and stayed within her usual routine and familiar locations, her mother says. Muller adds that Darrell was Kamela’s “home base.”

Muller describes her daughter as “a very sweet person” who excelled in school and dreamed of working with children. While substance use created difficulties in her life, Kamela deeply loves her kids, her mother emphasizes. The family is organizing a search party for her on Saturday, Nov. 22.

“I mean, if she’s out there and someone has her, we want her back,” Muller says. “She has a family that loves her, that misses her.”
