Mom of Identical Twins Reveals the Surprising Way Doctors Told Them Apart in the Womb

When Gabrielle Taylor arrived for what she assumed would be a routine ultrasound, she had no idea the appointment would spark one of TikTok’s most shared parenting moments.

In a now-viral video viewed millions of times, Taylor explains how her doctors distinguished between her identical twins before they were born. “This is how they were able to tell our identical twins apart in the womb,” she wrote in the caption — a simple line that quickly turned into a rallying point for parents of multiples.

“I feel like nobody really talks about twin pregnancies and what to expect when you’re delivering them,” Taylor says. She started posting on TikTok to share everyday life with her twins and toddler, and thought it would be fun to include a few “cool facts” about twins — including how doctors keep track of two identical babies in utero.

What she didn’t expect was how deeply it would resonate. The comments flooded in from people who felt seen for the first time.

“I was so shocked at how many people related to it,” she says. In her view, parents of multiples often face pregnancy and early newborn life without enough guidance. “I wish there were more resources for moms of multiples out there. There really isn’t anything — and that’s why it can be so overwhelming.”

Throughout her pregnancy, the babies were consistently labeled “Twin A” and “Twin B.” According to Taylor, Twin A was always positioned lower, with Twin B above. That steady distinction helped her feel grounded — until she noticed just how similar they were in every other way.

“They had very identical heartbeats, which is kind of crazy,” she says in the video. “When they would listen to the heartbeat, it would come out being literally the same — that’s where it got a little confusing, like, do we have the same baby? Did we switch babies?”

Even so, she trusted her medical team and clung to their method: A on the bottom, B on top.

Before all that tracking and routine sonograms, though, came the moment that changed everything: learning she was having twins at all.

“I was looking on the sonogram screen with the doctor confirming the pregnancy, and she said I might want to get my husband in here,” Taylor recalls. “I almost fainted because I saw what she saw — twins.”

Her husband walked in moments later and had an equally dramatic reaction. “My husband came in and looked at the screen and nearly dropped to the floor,” she says. “It didn’t even feel real — we were so shocked.”

She admits it didn’t truly sink in until she held them. “It honestly didn’t even set in until I physically had them in my arms and realized, ‘wow, there’s two of you.’ ”

As her pregnancy progressed, Taylor began to feel the difference in their positions herself. Doctors explained that Baby A stays closer to the cervix and Baby B sits farther away. Over time, she could tell which twin was moving just by where she felt kicks.

“When I felt kicks in my lower belly, I knew it was baby A,” she says. “When I felt the kicking up top, I knew it was baby B.”

But nothing prepared her for what happened in the delivery room.

During her C-section, Taylor assumed the babies would be clearly labeled right away — perhaps with hats or bracelets marked “A” and “B.” That didn’t happen.

“I was expecting them to have hats that said ‘A’ or ‘B,’ but the nurses didn’t do that,” she says. The medications and the rush of surgery made it even harder to track. “I wasn’t sure what baby I was looking at.”

Because the boys are identical, the confusion stuck. “Looking back, we get emotional and so upset that we don’t know who was who,” she says.

In those first hours, she and her husband tried to keep their bearings by constantly checking with each other — but neither felt certain. “We were already overwhelmed with two babies, so my husband and I just kept asking each other, ‘what baby do you have?’ with neither of us knowing,” she says.

Now it’s become a family joke and a tiny tradition rolled into one. “We make sure we put Lewis on the left for every picture since that’s the only way we can tell,” she says.

Still, she wishes the hospital had made the early days easier. “Feedings were so stressful,” she explains. “Looking back, we literally do not know who was who because there was nothing clear to label them.”

Even with that chaotic start, Taylor says the experience has shaped her family in a way she wouldn’t trade.

“It’s been a blessing watching all three boys grow up together,” she says. At first, the idea of three children under 2 felt terrifying. “Now we can’t even imagine not having twins.”

Her faith carried her through the hardest parts. “God gave them to us for a reason,” she says. “That’s because he knew we could handle the chaos.”

And while the mystery of “who was who” in those earliest photos may never be solved, Taylor says that’s part of the story now — one they’ll tell forever, with a smile.

Online, her TikTok keeps drawing parents into the conversation, many sharing their own messy, beautiful beginnings with multiples. Taylor is glad it opened a door she feels was missing.

“I really wish there were more resources for moms of multiples out there,” she says. “It can be so overwhelming — but it’s also the best kind of chaos there is.”
