A young mother was shocked when her own mom asked her to find a babysitter for Thanksgiving because her new boyfriend “doesn’t like kids.”

The 25-year-old shared her story on Reddit, explaining that she welcomed her daughter about seven months ago and was excited for the baby’s first holiday season.

“I was really excited to bring her to Thanksgiving at my mom’s house,” she wrote. “But last week, my mom called me and said her boyfriend (who she’s been dating for less than a year) ‘doesn’t like kids’ and doesn’t want a baby ‘ruining the dinner.’ “

Her mom even suggested she hire a babysitter so she could attend dinner without her own child.

The woman refused, telling her mom she would “absolutely not” celebrate Thanksgiving without her daughter. That led to an argument, with her mom accusing her of “choosing [her] baby over family.”

“Which… yeah? She’s my family!” the woman wrote.

She said she felt “so betrayed” that her mother would prioritize a new boyfriend over her grandchild. Many Reddit users supported her, saying she was right to stand her ground.

One commenter wrote, “So yeah, time to start planning ALL holidays without your mother,” while another suggested it may be best to go “low contact” with her mom.

Others encouraged her to start new traditions. “It sucks but it looks like it’s time to set up a new Thanksgiving tradition,” one person wrote. “Find some friends who may want a friendsgiving, or contact other family about it and let them know what’s going on. Maybe someone else will host, and you can still be with family.”

As another commenter pointed out, “Someone is choosing a baby over family, and it’s not you!”
