When a mother arrived late to pick up her child from day care, she expected to pay the penalty — but not to receive a sharply worded message from the center’s director afterward.

According to a Reddit post, the woman had been an hour late retrieving her child last Friday. She promptly paid a $90 cash late fee and explained she had a significant reason for the delay, noting that she had never been late before.

The message she later received from the day care director read:

“The late pick up on Friday had me concerned. [Staff member] worked 7:00–7:00 because your children could not get picked up. Your family may not be able to stay enrolled here. I hope you set alarms on your phone to not forget your children.”

The original poster (OP) said her friend, who is a labor and delivery nurse working 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., had arranged for her ex-husband to handle pickup. However, he failed to do so and didn’t inform her in advance.

When the day care called just after 6 p.m., she immediately left work, but it took her about 45 minutes to drive from the hospital.

The Reddit post asked whether the director’s message was an appropriate response and how the mother should address it.

Commenters were divided. One person suggested the message might have been intended for the ex-husband, but was also sent to the mother for recordkeeping.

“In my experience, my wife and I receive the same messages from daycare,” one commenter wrote. “It could be that the message was directed toward the ex-husband, but your friend received it too. It sounds like she did explain the situation, so I wouldn’t expect the daycare to come down on her so hard.”

They added, “If she was nothing but apologetic, I wouldn’t read into it too much. Professional? No. Warranted? Probably. I’d be more concerned about making sure the ex never does that again and risks their kids’ spot.”

Another commenter noted that some day cares are only licensed to operate during specific hours. Staying open past those limits could expose them to penalties.

“It varies by location, but our daycare is only licensed to run within certain hours,” they wrote. “If they’re found operating outside those hours, they can face serious repercussions — even closure.”

They also speculated that the ex-husband might have been late before without the mother’s knowledge, which could explain the tone of the message.

A third commenter was more blunt, saying that being an hour late without notice could justify the day care’s warning.

“A little pointed, but being an hour late and not giving them a heads-up would probably be enough to get ‘fired’ from daycare,” they wrote. “Especially these days — most places have apps or other quick ways to send a message.”
