The man charged in connection with the murders of an Ohio dentist and his wife was previously married to one of the victims for less than two years, court records show.

Michael David McKee, 39, has been arrested on murder charges tied to the Dec. 30 killings of Monique Tepe, 39, and Spencer Tepe, 37, in Columbus, Ohio.

Court filings indicate Monique Tepe married McKee in August 2015. She later filed for divorce in June 2017, citing that the two were “incompatible.” Records also state the pair lived together for about seven months during the marriage, separating in March 2016.

Monique and Spencer Tepe were found fatally shot inside their home, just feet from their two young children, ages 4 and 1. The children were not physically harmed.

Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the killings or said whether the couple had raised concerns about McKee prior to the shooting.

McKee was initially charged with two counts of murder after his arrest on Saturday, Jan. 10. Investigators reportedly used neighborhood surveillance footage to identify a suspect and trace a vehicle that arrived shortly before the deaths and left shortly after. Police later linked that vehicle to McKee and alleged he was in possession of it both before and after the homicides, according to the criminal complaint.

The charges were later upgraded to aggravated murder, according to a Jan. 11 court filing.

McKee appeared in an Illinois court on Monday, Jan. 12, where his attorney said he planned to enter not-guilty pleas. McKee also waived extradition, clearing the way for his transfer back to Ohio to face the charges, the Rockford Register Star reported. His attorney said he could be transferred as early as this week, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
