The mother of a Louisiana boy who was fatally struck in his family’s driveway has released a heartbreaking statement in the aftermath of his death.

In a Facebook message posted jointly with Ryan Lawson on Wednesday, Nov. 12, Abi Combs shared her first words publicly after the loss of her 5-year-old son, Carson Lawson, who was hit on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 11, while he was waiting for the school bus.

“There is absolutely nothing in this world that I could say to truly express the sorrow I will now and forever have in my heart,” she wrote.

“Yesterday morning, my baby boy, Carson passed away. My baby boy. Is gone,” Combs continued, calling his sudden death “the most traumatic and devastating scenario I have ever had to endure.”

She expressed gratitude to friends and supporters who have reached out, while asking for space to grieve: “Carson knew how much we loved him. I am devastated and completely broken. I will never be the same and I’m asking for privacy at this time to grieve my baby who was gone way too soon.”

Combs noted that funeral arrangements are being made and that services are planned in both Slidell, Louisiana — where the incident occurred — and in Jonesboro, Georgia.

“But for now, please respect our privacy as we begin our journey with mourning this devastating loss,” she added.

Loved ones have set up a Meal Train and a GoFundMe page to support the family through this difficult time.

During a news conference on Tuesday, the Slidell Police Department confirmed that Carson’s grandmother, 55-year-old Kristen Anders, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.

According to Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau, officers responded to the residence at around 7 a.m. and learned that Carson had been waiting in the driveway when Anders left the house, entered her large SUV, and began driving to work — unaware the child was directly in front of the vehicle.

Authorities said Carson died instantly.

After testing, investigators alleged Anders was impaired by alcohol and central nervous system depressants at the time of the incident.

“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” Seuzeneau said, adding that the tragic scene deeply affected every first responder who was present.
