Multiple Chicago police officers were attacked — at least one seriously enough to require hospitalization — while responding to a late-night shooting in the city’s downtown Loop on Friday.

The gunfire erupted near the intersection of State and Randolph streets around 10 p.m., only hours after a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the area, according to Fox 32.

Alderman Brian Hopkins, who represents Chicago’s 2nd Ward, said at least five people were shot. One victim is reported to be in critical condition with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the torso.

In a post on X, Hopkins described a large disturbance downtown, saying hundreds of juveniles were involved and that officers were targeted with pepper spray and stun guns during the response. He added that at least one officer was transported to the hospital.

Chicago police have not yet confirmed Hopkins’ account or released an official victim count. The investigation remains ongoing.
