Family get-togethers can be heartwarming during the holidays — until personal space and boundaries get pushed aside.

One new mother on Reddit says her festive season has turned into a stressful balancing act. With a baby at home, limited space and uninvited overnight guests, she’s questioning why her comfort seems to rank last in her own household.

“We have a 1 bedroom apartment with a 7 month old. Space is already so limited,” she shared. Still, her husband’s family insisted on staying with them for their 11-day Christmas visit — and her husband agreed before discussing it with her.

When she raised concerns about noise, space and routines, she felt dismissed. “I’m made to feel like the AH because I have an opinion,” she wrote, explaining that she’s accused of being “against his family” simply for pointing out the practical issues.

Her son already struggles with sleep, and she worries the increased noise will make things worse. On top of that, she’ll have to sacrifice her own comfort and privacy — including pumping several times a day — just to squeeze everyone in.

Meanwhile, her own family has offered more understanding, choosing not to visit yet because of the extra travel and lodging costs involved. That consideration only highlights how little her in-laws seem to acknowledge the strain their plans create.

She’s particularly uneasy about losing the only common area in their home. “I just think it’s rude to insist on sleeping on an air mattress that will take up half our living room,” she wrote. “My son will not have a safe place to play.”

The longer she thinks about the situation, the more upset she becomes — and commenters on Reddit voiced strong support.

“This isn’t about being against his family,” one response said. “You simply cannot host in your home for 11 days in a one bedroom apartment, especially for three additional people.”

Another commenter urged her to set firm boundaries: If her husband won’t speak up, she may need to call his family herself and explain that they’ll need to book alternative accommodations — and if they refuse, she could consider staying with her own family during the visit.
