The off-duty NYPD officer who was among the victims of Monday’s deadly mass shooting at a Manhattan office building has been identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a father of two whose wife is currently pregnant with their third child.

Islam was one of four people fatally shot when a gunman opened fire at 345 Park Avenue, home to offices including Blackstone and the NFL. A fifth person remains in critical condition. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed Islam’s identity during a press briefing at Weill Cornell Medical Center, calling him a proud immigrant from Bangladesh and a devoted NYPD officer with over three years of service.

“He was doing what he does best,” said Adams. “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. He loved this city. Everyone we spoke to said he was a man of deep faith, a man of God, someone who lived a life of service. He is the embodiment of what it means to be a New Yorker.”

Islam lived in the Bronx with his wife and children and had been with the department for three and a half years. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch echoed the mayor’s sentiment: “He was doing the job we asked him to do. He died a hero.”

According to Tisch, the shooter entered the building through the lobby and “immediately opened fire on an NYPD officer,” later identified as Islam, before continuing through the building and firing on additional victims.

Authorities said Tamura acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Officials also confirmed that Tamura had a documented history of mental illness.

The other three victims—one man and two women—have not yet been publicly identified as authorities work to notify their families. Four more people were treated at a local hospital after sustaining injuries while trying to flee the scene.

“Tonight, our city is reeling and four innocent families are mourning,” Mayor Adams wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of New York — a Bangladeshi immigrant who wore the NYPD uniform with pride to protect the people of this city.”

Islam is being remembered as a man of courage and conviction, who gave his life in the service of others.
