A short video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaking at a church celebration resurfaced online this week and quickly went viral — but much of the conversation centered on her appearance rather than what she was actually saying.
The 33-second clip, originally aired on C-SPAN on September 22, 2022, shows Ocasio-Cortez honoring the First Baptist Church of Corona during its 100th anniversary celebration. In the video, she highlights the church’s long-running food pantry, its employment programs for young people, its pandemic relief work, and its support for Queens’ diverse immigrant community.
The clip began spreading widely after an X user posted it with the caption “Jesus Christ.” It racked up more than 3 million views, along with a flood of reactions — many of them focused on Ocasio-Cortez’s looks instead of the substance of her remarks. Some posts veered into crude memes and political jabs, including references to socialism paired with screenshots from the video.
The responses weren’t uniform. Some users criticized the tone of the thread, while others defended her. One commenter wrote, “Goddamn it, we’re gonna lose the midterms.” Another pushed back, saying, “Call her anything but not ugly.” A third added, “It’s beautiful, I’m team AOC 2028.”
As the clip continued circulating, the attention around it increasingly overshadowed the message Ocasio-Cortez was delivering in the first place: praising the First Baptist Church of Corona for its role as a stabilizing community anchor under Pastor Patrick H. Young, and for its decades of service through outreach and support programs.
