A person has died after falling approximately 150 feet from a steep rock formation in Colorado, according to local authorities. The fatal incident occurred on Thursday, July 24, near the intersection of Eagle Gate and Pine Valley roads in Jefferson County, roughly 30 miles southwest of Denver.
The Elk Creek Fire Department confirmed the fall in a statement posted to Facebook, describing it as involving “a significant portion of free fall.” The victim’s identity and gender have not yet been released.
“It was a recovery, unfortunately, not a rescue,” said Elk Creek Fire Department spokeswoman Bethany Urban in an interview with the Denver Post. Investigators are still working to determine whether the fall happened on public or private land and what the individual was doing at the time.
Emergency crews carried out a technical rope recovery operation with help from Conifer Fire, the Alpine Rescue Team, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Photos from the scene show rescue teams navigating the steep terrain with ropes and harnesses.

“Our crews carried out a difficult high-angle rope recovery,” the department said. “We are deeply grateful for the support we received in such challenging conditions. Our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly painful time.”
The tragedy comes just one day after a separate incident in Colorado, in which a hiker fell nearly 200 feet down a snowfield near Saint Mary’s Glacier. That individual survived but suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital by helicopter, according to KRDO and the Denver Gazette.
As of Sunday, July 27, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about the July 24 fatal fall. The investigation remains ongoing.
