A police officer in Tennessee is recovering after being critically injured during a protective escort for Vice President JD Vance.

Officer Justin Brown of the Maryville Police Department was involved in a collision between his police motorcycle and a Tennessee Highway Patrol SUV along East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merrit Road at approximately 6:11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, according to authorities.

Brown was assigned to a dignitary protection detail at the time of the crash. Police Chief Tony Crisp said a group of nearby residents rushed in to help, providing lifesaving first aid before Brown was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He remained in critical condition and underwent surgery the following day.

Police shared on Sunday, Nov. 16, that Brown has shown “small improvements” while noting that his injuries are substantial. Chief Crisp expressed gratitude for progress so far but said the officer is expected to remain hospitalized for an extended period.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that Vice President Vance was part of the motorcade. Katherine Pierce, the agency’s resident agent in charge in Knoxville, said the protectees were not affected by the incident.

“The U.S. Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic incident involving local law enforcement personnel that occurred this evening in Maryville, Tennessee, while they were supporting a protective motorcade movement,” Pierce said in a statement. She added that the agency stands with its local partners during this difficult time.

Chief Crisp also thanked the first responders and hospital staff, praising bystanders whose swift actions aided in saving Brown’s life. He noted that the department has received an outpouring of support through messages, emails, and social media.

“Our hearts and prayers also go out to the trooper involved in the crash,” Crisp said.

The trooper was evaluated by paramedics but did not require hospitalization, according to ABC News. The Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Critical Incident Response Team is now leading the investigation into the collision.
