Authorities in Oregon are searching for a 78-year-old man who went missing after telling his family he had “fallen into a hole.”
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Oct. 16, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office urged residents to check their properties for any sign of Thomas Weightman, who was reported missing on Tuesday shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time.
“On Tuesday, October 14th, 2025, at approximately 5:37 p.m., Forest Grove Police Department officers responded to a report of a missing person near the intersection of Valley Crest Way and Circle Crest Drive,” the post stated. “Family members reported 78-year-old Thomas Weightman left their nearby residence on foot at approximately 10 a.m. but did not return home.”
During a brief phone call, authorities said, “Thomas said he fell into a hole and was unsure of his location.”
Although officers used cell phone triangulation in an effort to locate him in what they described as a remote area, those attempts have so far been unsuccessful.

Officials said Weightman has gray hair, a gray beard, and glasses. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs approximately 165 pounds.
He was last seen on Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. on NW Gales Creek Road, “wearing black shoes, blue jeans, a red flannel button-up shirt, and a dark-colored baseball hat,” according to the sheriff’s office.
“Continued search efforts coordinated by the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) team are underway, and searchers are asking residents along Gales Creek Road for help checking their property,” officials wrote.
They added that SAR is specifically requesting property owners “south of NW Wilson River Highway, along NW Gales Creek Road, down to NW Mystic Drive, with an eastern boundary of NW Shearer Road” to assist in the search.
Anyone with information or who has seen Weightman recently is asked to contact authorities’ non-emergency dispatch line at 503-629-0111 or call 911.
