Poll: Nearly 40% of Americans Open to Backing Elon Musk’s Third Party

Nearly four in ten Americans say they would consider supporting Elon Musk’s proposed third political party, according to a new poll—highlighting the growing appetite for an alternative to the two-party system.

The survey, conducted by Quantus Insights between June 30 and July 2, found that 14% of registered voters said they would be “very likely” to support a political party created by the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, while 26% said they would be “somewhat likely.” About 38% said they were unlikely to support such a move, and 22% remained undecided. The poll had a margin of error of ±3%.

Musk floated the idea of forming “The America Party” earlier this week, just days after President Donald Trump signed his sweeping “One Big, Beautiful Bill” into law—a piece of legislation Musk harshly criticized as “insane.” Their disagreement led to a very public fallout, with Musk distancing himself from Trump’s political vision.

“Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE,” Musk wrote on X. “Great day for some… fireworks,” he added in a Fourth of July post.

GOP Men and Independents Show Strongest Support

The Quantus poll revealed clear demographic divides in enthusiasm for Musk’s political movement. Among Republican men, 23% said they were very likely and 34% somewhat likely to support the America Party—meaning over half expressed interest in Musk as a political force. Nearly 47% of independent men also said they were open to supporting his party.

By contrast, skepticism remains high among Democrats and older voters, particularly women over 50, who are the least likely to back a Musk-led political initiative.

A Symptom of Broader Discontent?

While Musk’s personal brand may be a factor, the pollster said the numbers point to deeper frustrations with the political status quo.

“This isn’t just about Elon Musk,” Quantus stated. “It’s about a growing sense that the current political system isn’t representing the country as it truly is—or as it wants to be.”

Although 40% support for a hypothetical party might seem high, it’s consistent with earlier national sentiment. A 2023 Gallup survey found that 63% of Americans said a third major political party was needed.

Background: A Rift with Trump

The timing of Musk’s party announcement, right after Trump’s bill passed, added fuel to their ongoing feud. The legislation, which includes sweeping tax cuts and deep reductions to Medicaid and food assistance programs, was narrowly passed by the House and signed into law on July 4.

Musk, once a high-profile Trump ally, has increasingly broken from the former president’s orbit, criticizing his leadership style and policy agenda. Trump, in turn, recently accused Musk of trying to “play games” and questioned his loyalty.

As 2026 approaches, and with Musk teasing a more direct role in politics, the third-party conversation may only get louder. Whether it translates into real political traction—or just more disruption—remains to be seen.
