A postal worker was seriously injured after being attacked by a dog while delivering mail in South Carolina, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO).
The incident occurred on Oct. 11, when the worker approached a residence to deliver mail. “The dog or dogs attacked the employee, resulting in multiple injuries,” the NCSO said in a statement on Facebook. Emergency services arrived at the scene, and the postal worker was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment.
Medical assistance was provided by Newberry County Emergency Medical Services, the Newberry County Rescue Squad, and the Newberry City Fire Department. The victim’s identity and current condition have not yet been released.

Sheriff Lee Foster confirmed that as of Oct. 18, the victim remained hospitalized. “The victim is still in an area hospital receiving treatment for wounds caused by a pit bull dog,” Foster said. “The suspected dog is in animal control custody. No charges have been filed, and the incident remains under investigation. The dogs were on the owner’s property, and the postal worker was delivering a package.”
According to an incident report obtained by Cleveland 19 News, the worker was allegedly attacked by a black and white pit bull. The dog continued to pursue and bite as the postal worker tried to get back inside their vehicle. Officers from the Newberry Police Department used spray to subdue the dog, ending the attack before the victim was airlifted for medical care.

Sheriff Foster told the outlet that the worker sustained injuries to both their upper and lower body.
The dog was reportedly wearing an electronic fence collar designed to keep it within the property boundaries. After the attack, it was taken to an animal shelter for quarantine. “Any situation like that, the homeowner is responsible for the animals, but I don’t know right now if it’s going to be any type of criminal responsibility. We are exploring that,” Foster said.
The NCSO emphasized that dog attacks have become “a significant hazard for postal workers,” urging pet owners to ensure their animals are properly secured—especially during mail delivery hours.
The ongoing investigation involves the NCSO, the Newberry City Police Department, Newberry County Animal Care and Control, and the United States Postal Service.
