Authorities have opened a homicide investigation following the discovery of a pregnant woman and her young son found dead inside a home in Greenwood, Indiana.
Karon J. Clay, 33, and her 3-year-old son, Karter K. Clay, were found deceased on Monday, August 4, after officers conducted a welfare check at the residence, according to 13 News, The Daily Journal, and FOX 59, all citing statements from the Greenwood Police Department.
The Johnson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the victims and told PEOPLE that Karon Clay was in her third trimester at the time of her death.
Police told 13 News there were visible signs of decomposition when the bodies were found.
Although the coroner has not released the official cause or manner of death, investigators are treating the case as a homicide, per 13 News, FOX 59, and WIBC.
It remains unclear whether police have identified any suspects or persons of interest. Greenwood police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.
“Detectives are working diligently to find who’s responsible for this heinous act and bring them to justice,” Police Chief James Ison told 13 News. He declined to provide specific details, citing the need to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
According to Ison, investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and are asking for any additional video that might show suspicious activity in the area between July 28 and August 1.
