President Donald Trump issued a statement Sunday following the deadly mass shooting at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, that left one worshipper dead and nine others injured.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had been briefed on the tragedy and confirmed that federal officials are leading the investigation.

What Happened

The attack unfolded during Sunday morning services when a suspect rammed his vehicle through the church’s main entrance, opened fire with an assault rifle, and then set the building on fire, according to law enforcement.

The suspect, identified as a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, was killed in a shootout with police while attempting to flee.

Authorities said the violence began around 10:25 a.m. local time, during sacrament services. Rescue teams battled both the gunfire and the fire, which spread through the church. As of early afternoon, the blaze had been contained, but emergency crews continued searching for trapped victims.

Medical mutual aid units arrived from surrounding towns, including Oxford, Michigan, about 20 miles away.

Why It Matters

The attack comes just a day after the passing of Russell Nelson, who led the LDS church from 2018 until his death at 101. It also follows a string of violent incidents targeting religious communities nationwide, including the recent mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, which killed two children and injured 17 others.

Trump’s Statement

On Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“I have been briefed on the horrendous shooting that took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The FBI was immediately on scene, and will be leading the Federal Investigation, and providing full support to State and Local Officials. The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn. This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America. The Trump Administration will keep the Public posted, as we always do. In the meantime, PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!”
