Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk, has been officially charged with murder and other crimes. Prosecutors will ask for the death penalty, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray said at a press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Robinson faces single counts of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and committing a violent crime in the presence of a child. He also faces two counts each of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Gray said Robinson is charged with witness tampering because he allegedly told his roommate to delete messages that could get him in trouble and not to talk to law enforcement.

Authorities reported that Kirk was shot from the roof of a building about 200 yards away while speaking at a rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Sept. 10.

Robinson was arrested after Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said he confessed to a family member. This happened after the family saw FBI surveillance images, and a family friend later reported him to the police.

Robinson has no previous criminal record. He is registered to vote but has never voted and is listed as “unaffiliated” with any political party.

Cox said Robinson lived with a roommate, who was also a romantic partner, in St. George, Utah, which is over 250 miles away from Utah Valley’s campus in Orem.

The roommate, who is not accused of any crimes, has been “very cooperative,” Cox said, and shared Discord messages that Robinson allegedly sent about the shooting.
