A lower-league football match in Brazil took a shocking turn over the weekend when police officers in bulletproof vests stormed the field and arrested the referee in the middle of the game.
The surreal moment unfolded during a match in Guarujá, São Paulo, as referee Ederson Carlos da Silva issued a yellow card following a rough tackle. Just seconds later, several uniformed officers approached from behind, swiftly handcuffing the 38-year-old and leading him off the pitch. Players stepped aside in confusion, while stunned fans looked on from the stands.
The referee, it turns out, was wanted for his alleged role in a drug trafficking operation.
According to São Paulo Civil Police chief Glaucus Silva, Da Silva’s active social media presence had helped authorities track him down. “He is a person who has a very active social life, so he was already on our radar,” Silva told Brazilian outlet g1.
The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation launched in November 2024, after police intercepted a truck carrying 450 kilograms of cocaine in São Paulo. The driver and passenger were arrested on the spot, and authorities later identified Da Silva as a key suspect — allegedly overseeing logistics for the drug ring.
Chief narcotics investigator Eduardo Camargo said Da Silva was suspected of organizing the storage and distribution of the drugs through rental properties used by the criminal network. Investigators were unaware of his side job as a football referee, as his official employment records only listed him as a foreman at a company.
“He wasn’t listed as a referee in any formal documentation,” said Eduardo Lima, another official in the Narcotics Investigations Police Station. “That’s why he hadn’t been located until now. Thanks to the police in Guarujá, we were finally able to apprehend him.”
Police say six other suspects connected to the trafficking network remain at large.
