Rev. Jesse Jackson has reportedly been hospitalized and is now under observation due to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition — the organization he founded — shared that the 84-year-old civil rights icon had been admitted to the hospital, according to CNN.

“He has been managing this neurodegenerative condition for more than a decade,” the organization said, per the outlet. “He was originally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease; however, last April, his PSP condition was confirmed. The family appreciates all prayers at this time.”

Progressive supranuclear palsy is a serious brain disorder that can impact balance, swallowing, walking, and eye movements, according to the Mayo Clinic. The disease results from damaged brain cells and can significantly affect mobility and daily function.

PSP typically worsens as time goes on and can cause severe complications, such as difficulty swallowing and pneumonia, per Mayo Clinic. While there is no cure, treatment focuses on symptom management.

Jackson has faced multiple health challenges in recent years. In April 2021, he was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition noted at the time that both Jackson and his wife, Jacqueline, tested positive and were under medical care, encouraging anyone who recently interacted with them to follow CDC guidance.

Later that same year, he was hospitalized again after suffering a fall and hitting his head during an event at Howard University.
