Rob Reiner’s past comments about the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk are circulating again after President Donald Trump made controversial remarks about the filmmaker’s recent death.

Clips have spread across social media showing The Princess Bride director speaking about Kirk’s killing during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored. The renewed attention comes after Trump criticized Reiner following the discovery that Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14.

Their son, Nick Reiner, was charged Tuesday, Dec. 16, with two counts of first-degree murder, with a special allegation of using a knife, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors have not ruled out seeking the death penalty.

In a post on Truth Social responding to Reiner’s death, Trump, 79, wrote that the “once very talented movie director and comedy star” died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”

Online, many contrasted the president’s statement with Reiner’s earlier remarks about Kirk, despite their political differences. Reiner has been a prominent liberal and a frequent Trump critic, while Kirk was a conservative activist and Trump supporter.

During a September episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, Reiner described Kirk’s killing as an “absolute horror,” adding that he had “unfortunately [seen] the video” of Kirk being shot during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

“It’s beyond belief what happened to him,” Reiner told Morgan. “That should never happen to anybody. I don’t care what your political beliefs are. That’s not acceptable. That’s not a solution to solving problems.”

On Monday, Dec. 15, Morgan re-shared the clip on X, writing, “As President Trump trashes Rob Reiner following his murder, a reminder of how Reiner responded on my show to the murder of Charlie Kirk.”

In another post, Morgan criticized Trump’s remarks, writing over a screenshot of the president’s Truth Social message: “This is a dreadful thing to say about a man who just got murdered by his troubled son. Delete it, Mr President @realDonaldTrump.”

This comes as several public figures and lawmakers criticized Trump’s comments, including Jimmy Kimmel, Whoopi Goldberg, and Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

On Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel called the remarks “hateful and vile,” and said the president showed a lack of “compassion and leadership” by issuing the statement.

On The View, Goldberg also condemned the comments, saying, “I don’t understand the man in that White House. Because he talks so much about Charlie Kirk and caring, and suddenly this is what he puts out. Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”

Greene likewise denounced the post, saying, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”

“Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy, especially when it ends in murder,” she added.
