Secretary of State Marco Rubio is downplaying chatter about a possible 2028 presidential run, instead throwing his full support behind Vice President JD Vance as the Republican Party’s future standard-bearer.

“I think JD Vance would be a great nominee if he decides to run,” Rubio said in a Saturday interview with Lara Trump on My View with Lara Trump on Fox News Channel. He also called Vance one of his “closest friends in politics.”

Loyal to Trump and Content in Cabinet Role

Rubio emphasized that he has no personal ambitions beyond his current role and expressed deep gratitude for serving in President Donald Trump’s Cabinet.

“I want to do this job as long as the President allows me to,” Rubio said.

Trump tapped Rubio as Secretary of State after his 2024 election victory over then–Vice President Kamala Harris. The former Florida senator was one of the first Cabinet appointments confirmed under Trump’s new administration.

Reflects on Career and Impact

During the interview, Rubio said he would be content if this role marked the peak of his public service career.

“If I can serve in this job through the duration of this presidency, and we continue achieving at the pace we’ve seen over the last six months, I’ll be proud to look back and say I made a difference and served my country well,” he said. “And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career.”

Rubio’s remarks appear aimed at silencing speculation around 2028 and reinforcing unity within President Trump’s team — signaling that, for now, all eyes remain on executing the current administration’s agenda.
