Billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel has brought his provocative lecture series on the biblical Antichrist to the heart of the Catholic world, igniting a fierce backlash from Italian lawmakers and the Holy See.

The Palantir co-founder’s four-day summit in Rome explores a controversial intersection of theology and global risk, framing Silicon Valley elites as a final line of defense against what he describes as apocalyptic administrative overreach.

The ‘Comforting’ Apocalypse

Thiel’s thesis, previously shared in private sessions in San Francisco and Paris, suggests the Antichrist will not appear as an overtly malevolent figure. Instead, Thiel warns of a “reassuring administrator” who seizes power by promising safety and an end to the “existential risks” posed by runaway technology and climate change.

According to Thiel, those seeking to regulate artificial intelligence or enforce environmental standards—including figures like Greta Thunberg—are inadvertently serving as pawns for this centralized control. He positions unrestrained technological innovation not just as a business priority, but as a spiritual necessity to protect Western civilization.

The Vatican and Parliament React

The reception in Rome has been decidedly frosty. The Vatican, which has increasingly called for the “moral regulation” of AI under Pope Leo XIV, viewed Thiel’s arrival as a direct ideological challenge.

  • The Church’s Stance: Paolo Benanti, a priest and advisor to the papacy on AI ethics, characterized Thiel’s views as a “radicalization” of Western individualism.
  • The Bishops’ Critique: Avvenire, a newspaper owned by the Italian bishops’ conference, accused Thiel of favoring a “superplutocracy” that would replace democratic rule of law with an elite technocracy. The publication argued that Thiel’s definition of the Antichrist conveniently applies to anyone placing limits on “unlimited progress.”

The controversy has also spilled into the secular halls of power. During a recent parliamentary session, Italian lawmakers labeled Thiel’s ideas “scandalous” and “ideological extremism.” The debate has prompted fresh demands for transparency regarding the Italian government’s contracts with Palantir, the defense technology firm Thiel chairs.

A Divided Defense of the West

The event was organized in part by the Vincenzo Gioberti Cultural Association, a group with ties to Italy’s far-right. Supporters frame Thiel’s warnings as a courageous defense of the West’s spiritual identity against “hidden forces” seeking its destruction.

However, as Thiel’s blend of Christian eschatology and Silicon Valley techno-optimism meets the ancient institutions of Rome, it has exposed a deepening rift between the architects of the future and the traditional guardians of global ethics.
