Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday afternoon at the State University of New York at Morrisville, which prompted a campus-wide lockdown and cancellation of evening classes.

According to the New York State Police (NYSP), officers responded around 3:45 p.m. to South Hall, one of the university’s residential buildings, after receiving a report that a person had been shot.

Upon arrival, troopers found a 20-year-old man—who is not enrolled at SUNY Morrisville—suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported, and authorities said there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to campus safety.

During the initial response, the university issued an emergency alert advising all students and staff to shelter in place. “Students in classes currently are required to remain in place. Please remain where you are until the lockdown has been lifted,” the school posted on X.

Later that evening, the university announced that the lockdown had been lifted for most of the campus, except for Onondaga and South Hall. Residents of those buildings were instructed to stay inside while law enforcement continued searches overnight. Students cleared from the affected halls were directed to the Rec Center, where meals were provided; others could eat at the Seneca Dining Hall.

“It’s one of those things that you hear about that you think will never happen to you,” student Paige Novak told CNY Central, describing the sudden emergency alert that interrupted classes.

A coordinated investigation remains underway, led by the NYSP with assistance from SUNY Morrisville campus police and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. A command post has been established as officers process the scene and search nearby areas. Units from the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), Uniformed Services, Special Operations Response Team (SORT), and K9 divisions are all participating.

The university urged students and staff to follow directions from law enforcement officers on site. As of Monday evening, the NYSP reported no additional updates on the case.

New York Governor Kathleen Hochul said on X that she had been briefed on the incident.
