A North Carolina woman faces multiple criminal charges, including child abuse, after police say she left two small children inside a sweltering vehicle while she allegedly shoplifted from a local Walmart.
Erika Johnson, 35, was taken into custody on March 14 in Washington, N.C., located approximately 100 miles east of Raleigh. What began as a routine shoplifting and trespassing call quickly escalated into a life-threatening emergency for two children trapped in a locked car.
The Arrest and Deception
According to magistrate orders obtained by investigators, Washington Police initially approached Johnson inside the retail outlet. Officers determined she had entered the premises despite a standing order banning her from the property.
During the encounter, authorities discovered Johnson had allegedly concealed a significant quantity of clothing inside a plastic trash can she intended to purchase. However, the investigation took a critical turn when Johnson’s 3-year-old daughter, who was with her in the store, informed officers that her siblings were still in the vehicle.
Court documents allege that upon hearing her daughter’s statement, Johnson intentionally misled police regarding the location of her car in the parking lot. The deception forced officers to coordinate with Walmart security to review surveillance footage. By tracking the vehicle’s arrival on camera, police eventually located the car parked illegally in a designated handicap space.

Children Rescued from Overheating
Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old infant. Both children were showing signs of distress from the heat.
Emergency medical services transported the siblings to a local hospital, where they were treated for overheating. Officials have not provided an update on their current condition, though they were stabilized following the rescue.
