A North Carolina woman faces multiple criminal charges after allegedly abandoning her two youngest children in a vehicle while she shoplifted from a local Walmart. The incident, which escalated when the suspect reportedly misled officers about the vehicle’s location, resulted in the children being hospitalized for heat-related injuries.
Erika Johnson, 35, was taken into custody on March 14 at a Walmart in Washington, located approximately 100 miles east of Raleigh.
Critical Delay in Locating Endangered Children
The situation shifted from a retail theft investigation to a life-threatening emergency when Johnson’s 3-year-old daughter, who was with her in the store, informed police that her siblings were still in the car. According to magistrate orders, the vehicle contained a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old infant.
Authorities allege that upon being questioned, Johnson provided false information regarding the car’s location in the parking lot. This forced Washington Police Department officers and Walmart security to conduct an emergency review of surveillance footage to identify the vehicle.
Once located, the two children were rushed to a nearby hospital. Medical staff treated both minors for overheating. While the current condition of the children has not been publicly updated, the incident highlights the extreme risks of vehicular heatstroke, even in early spring.

Extensive List of Criminal Charges
Johnson’s arrest followed an initial confrontation over trespassing and theft. Security officials noted that Johnson had previously been barred from the premises. During the March 14 incident, she allegedly attempted to smuggle a large quantity of clothing out of the store inside a trash can she had purchased.

Upon her processing at the Beaufort County Detention Center, Johnson was charged with:
- Two counts of misdemeanor child abuse
- Two counts of resisting a police officer
- Shoplifting (concealment of goods)
- Second-degree trespassing
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Illegal parking in a designated handicap space
A Pattern of Criminal Activity
Court records reveal that this is Johnson’s third shoplifting-related arrest in 2026. She faces pending charges for two separate incidents allegedly committed in February.
Johnson remains in custody with bail set at $35,000. While she does not currently have legal representation, she has filed an affidavit of indigency requesting a court-appointed public defender.
