A Florida woman is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly attacking another driver with bear mace — all because the motorist ran over a chicken crossing the road.
Cynthia Diaz Sosa, 38, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of burglary with assault or battery after the July 9 incident in Key West, according to an arrest report obtained by PEOPLE. She has pleaded not guilty, court records show.
Authorities say Sosa had stopped her car around 5 p.m. to allow a chicken to cross an intersection when another driver behind her honked, then passed her — hitting and killing the bird in the process. According to the report, Sosa became enraged.
“She wanted to teach her a lesson,” Sosa allegedly told police.
What followed was a tense confrontation. Sosa reportedly followed the driver, tried to force open her car door, and then sprayed bear mace into the vehicle, directly hitting the driver in the face while she was still seated, the arrest report states.
The woman told police she had been on her way to pick up her child from daycare. She and her passenger were both hit with the spray as they struggled to keep the door closed, temporarily blinding them and preventing them from seeing where Sosa drove off, according to the report. Medics treated them at the scene.
A witness confirmed seeing the black sedan Sosa was driving flee the area after the attack.
Sosa was later arrested and posted a $35,000 bond. Her arraignment is scheduled for July 24.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, she has not issued any public statements regarding the incident.
