Sheinelle Jones is opening up about life without her late husband, Uche Ojeh, four months after his passing.
The Today show co-host returned to the NBC morning program on Friday, Sept. 5, after taking an extended leave following Ojeh’s death from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Her return was first announced by Savannah Guthrie on Sept. 1. In a pre-taped interview with Guthrie, Jones spoke publicly for the first time about her loss.
“My heart is shattered in a million pieces,” Jones said. “The life I’ve known since I was 19 is no more. I’ve always wanted kids, and now I have three — and they’ve lost their dad. I’m their mom. It sucks.”
She described the grief as something she faces “day to day,” adding, “It’s horrible. It’s just horrible.” At the same time, she called it a “beautiful nightmare,” reflecting on the love she and Ojeh shared even in his final months.

Recalling their time in the hospital, Jones said, “We would just hold hands and the nurses would call us the ‘love birds.’ We’d look at each other and say, ‘I love you.’ That’s what I mean by ‘beautiful nightmare.’ Watching him fight was heartbreaking, but the love, the strength, and the humanity we saw during that time was beautiful.”
Jones revealed she knew about her husband’s diagnosis for more than a year before taking time away from Today. She insisted she wasn’t “faking” her happiness on-air, saying, “My joy is real. I would do the show, then get in the car and go be with him during chemo.”
At first, she said, she truly believed her husband would recover. “I knew it was going to be tough, but we all believed he’d be okay,” she shared.
The experience, she explained, has reshaped how she thinks about grief. “I don’t run away from crying anymore. I see it as my ‘cleansing rain,’ and it’s okay.”

Jones also spoke about how her husband’s faith inspired her. “I watched him in his toughest moments, and his faith gave him peace. If Uche could have faith when his life was on the line, surely I can too.”
Her decision to return to Today was intentional. She hopes to inspire others going through similar struggles. “Cancer doesn’t have to steal our joy. We can get up, go to work or school, and live fully. Honestly, I feel like Uche’s heartbeat lives on in mine. I owe it to him to make the most of every day.”
She added that she hopes people see her in a new light: “If you see me laughing on the show, root for me, because I’m fighting for my joy.”
Following the interview, Jones rejoined her Today colleagues on the couch, calling them her “oxygen” during this painful time.
Ojeh passed away on May 23 at the age of 45. He and Jones, 47, had been married nearly 20 years and shared three children: Kayin, 15, and twins Clara and Uche, 12.

When the Today team first shared news of Ojeh’s death, Jones posted a clip of the segment on Instagram and thanked viewers for their support.
Many friends and former colleagues also reached out. Hoda Kotb commented, “Holding you and your babies Sheinelle 🙏,” while Tamron Hall wrote, “Sheinelle, our prayers and love are with you and your family.” Katie Couric shared a tribute of her own, writing, “My heart is breaking for her and their three children. Please hold them in your hearts.”
Prior to Ojeh’s diagnosis becoming public, co-host Dylan Dreyer told Entertainment Tonight, “We chat with her often. A week doesn’t go by where we’re not checking in, seeing how she’s doing.”
