Sheinelle Jones is opening up about life after losing her husband, Uche Ojeh, who passed away at 45 following a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

The Today co-host returned to the NBC morning show on Friday, Sept. 5, marking her first interview since his death on May 23. In a pre-taped conversation with colleague Savannah Guthrie, Jones spoke candidly about her grief.

“My heart is shattered in a million pieces,” she said. “The life that I’ve known since I was 19 is no more. I’ve always wanted kids and I have three kids of my own now, and they’ve lost their dad. And I’m their mom. It sucks.”

Jones described her emotions as a “beautiful nightmare,” recalling moments in the hospital with Ojeh. “We would just hold hands, and the nurses called us the ‘love birds,’” she shared. “It was a nightmare watching a 45-year-old who ran triathlons and lived for soccer fight this disease. But the way he fought, the way we rallied together, and the kindness we saw from others — that was beautiful.”

She revealed that she had known about Ojeh’s diagnosis for more than a year before taking a leave from Today. Despite the private pain, she said her joy on-air was genuine. “I thought, ‘I’m not faking it. My joy is real.’ I would do the show and then hop in the car to be with him during chemo,” she explained.

Jones admitted she believed he would recover. “I knew it was going to be tough, but we all thought he’d be okay,” she said. His strength and faith, she added, shaped her own approach to grief. “I don’t run from crying anymore. I see it as my cleansing rain.”

As she steps back into work, Jones said she is carrying forward the lessons her husband lived by. “I watched him in his toughest moments, and his faith gave him peace. So I think, if Uche can have faith when his life was on the line, surely I can too.”

Returning to Today was a deliberate choice. She hopes her presence inspires others facing similar struggles. “Cancer doesn’t have to steal our joy,” she said. “We can grieve but still move forward. We don’t move on, but we move forward with our loved ones.”

Jones also asked viewers for grace as she continues her journey. “If you see me laughing or having a good time on the show, root for me — because I’m fighting for my joy.”

Following the interview, she rejoined her co-hosts on set, thanking them for their support. She has previously shared a brief message with fans on Instagram, writing, “Thank you, for all your love and support.”

Jones and Ojeh had been married for nearly 20 years and shared three children together: Kayin, 15, and twins Clara and Uche, 12.

Friends and colleagues, including Hoda Kotb and Tamron Hall, expressed their love and sympathy when news of Ojeh’s passing was first shared. Katie Couric also posted a tribute, writing, “My heart is breaking for her and their three children. Please hold them in your hearts. Love you Sheinelle.”

Prior to his passing, Jones’ co-host Dylan Dreyer told Entertainment Tonight, “We chat with her often. A week doesn’t go by where we’re not checking in, seeing how she’s doing.”
