Single Woman Refuses to ‘Subsidize’ Family Vacation After Being Asked to Pay Same Amount as Married Sisters with Kids

Family vacations are meant to be a chance to relax, reconnect and make memories — not ignite money disputes.

For one Reddit user, though, a long-running tradition of renting a lakeside house with her parents, two sisters and four adult nieces and nephews has turned into a financial headache.

“Every year my family (parents, two sisters and 4 nieces/nephews) go on a family getaway,” she wrote in a recent post. “We rent a house on a lake and take time to enjoy being together.”

This year, one of her sisters handled the booking and chose a six-bedroom home so everyone would have their own space.

According to the poster, the setup seemed straightforward: one bedroom for her, one for her parents, one for each sister and their husbands, and two bedrooms for the kids.

The conflict started when the bill came due. “I just got the bill for my portion and it is 1/4 of the total costs (I am single with no kids),” she explained.

Her family’s reasoning was that the cost should be split “by family,” meaning each household pays an equal share. The Redditor, however, argued that it felt unfair for a single person to pay the same as families with multiple adults — especially when there are four adults across her sisters’ households.

When she suggested dividing the cost based on bedrooms instead, the idea was “shot down” immediately.

Now she’s left wondering why she’s expected to “subsidize my sister’s families portions.”

Many commenters sided with her, saying that splitting the cost by bedroom was a “logical and fair” approach and expressing confusion over why her relatives rejected it.

“Tell your sister if it’s by family, then rent a 4 bdrm place and you’ll pay 1/4 of cost,” one person wrote. “If she wants a 6 bdrm place then you’re paying by room WHICH IS 1/6th of cost.”

Others proposed dividing the total per person, particularly since all of the “kids” on the trip are now adults.

“The large majority of family vacation isn’t spent in the bedroom, so why charge by that,” another user argued. “Each adult pay their portion…or if the parents choose they can pay for their kids.”
