The only survivor of the devastating Air India crash is speaking publicly about the immense grief and trauma he continues to endure after losing 241 lives on board — including his own brother.

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 39, was the sole person to make it out alive after the London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner went down in Ahmedabad on June 12. The crash claimed 241 passengers and crew, as well as 19 people on the ground.

In an interview with British media four months later, Ramesh reflected on the toll the tragedy has taken. “God gave me life but took all my happiness, and from my family,” he told the PA news agency, according to The Guardian. “It completely brought down my family … it’s very difficult for me and my family.”

Ramesh described the aftermath as a painful blur. “I lost everything,” he said. “My happiness, my brother — everything that mattered.”

In a separate conversation with the BBC, he admitted that he still struggles to comprehend how he alone survived. Calling it “a miracle,” he said he feels haunted by the loss of his brother Ajay, whom he described as his “backbone.”

“Now I’m alone,” Ramesh shared. “I just sit in my room alone, not talking with my wife, my son. I just like to be alone in my house.”

Months after the crash, Ramesh’s physical recovery remains incomplete. He told the BBC that pain in his leg, shoulder, knee, and back still prevents him from working or driving. His advisors have also confirmed that he has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Despite the support of his family, Ramesh continues to experience flashbacks. “I just stay awake, I sleep maybe three to four hours,” he said, according to The Guardian. “Yes, it’s a miracle I survived, but I lost everything. I lost my brother. I’m broken.”
