Stephen A. Smith has revealed the two Democrats he’s most enthusiastic about seeing run against Republicans in the 2028 presidential election.

On his Straight Shooter talk show, Smith took a call from someone identifying themselves as Mark from Wisconsin. The caller described themselves as liberal but expressed hesitation about California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) as a potential 2028 candidate. Smith quickly acknowledged the concern.

“You shouldn’t be. Let me tell you something right now: first of all, I’ve got two candidates that are my favorites. I’m not telling you to vote as I vote – I am just being honest and open with you about who my two favorite candidates are,” he said.

Smith highlighted Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) and Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) as his top picks.

“I love Governor Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania and Governor Wes Moore from Maryland – those are my two, and not necessarily in that order,” he explained, calling Moore the “real deal.”

According to Smith, Moore has the ability to “communicate across the aisle” and should not be overlooked by Democrats as a candidate with broad appeal.

Though Smith is primarily known as a sports broadcaster, he has increasingly weighed in on political matters in recent months and has even hinted at a possible political run of his own.

Regarding Newsom, Smith noted that while the governor looks “presidential” and has a good heart, California’s economic challenges could pose significant obstacles for a national campaign.
