The Supreme Court has released its full schedule of oral arguments for October and November.

Cases on the Docket
The Court will open its 2025 term on October 6 with Villareal v. Texas. The case asks whether a defendant’s right to counsel is violated if a judge prevents the defendant and their lawyer from discussing testimony during an overnight break.

On the same day, justices will also hear Berk v. Choy. This case questions whether a state law that requires dismissing a complaint not filed with an expert affidavit can also apply in federal court.

Other cases scheduled for October include Chiles v. Salazar, Barrett v. United States, Bowe v. United States, Ellingburg v. United States, Bost v. Illinois Board of Elections, Postal Service v. Konan, Louisiana v. Callais, Robinson v. Callais, and Case v. Montana.

Why It Matters
Several cases on the calendar deal with issues that have drawn wide attention.

In Chiles v. Salazar, the Court will review whether Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy for minors violates free speech protections. In 2023, the Court declined to hear a similar challenge to Washington’s ban. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Brett Kavanaugh wanted to take that case, but four votes are required for the Court to proceed.

Another important case is Louisiana v. Callais, scheduled for reargument on October 15. The case challenges Louisiana’s congressional map and questions whether it was racially gerrymandered to create majority-minority districts, possibly violating the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments.

Looking Ahead
In November, the Court will hear Rico v. United States, Hamm v. Smith, Coney Island Auto Parts, Inc. v. Burton, and Fernandez v. United States.

Current Supreme Court Justices
The Court is made up of Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

When Does the Court Reconvene?
The Supreme Court’s 2025 term officially begins on October 6.
