TAMPA, FLORIDA – Protesters gathered outside the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa Bay on Saturday, voicing their opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and broader conservative agenda.
Demonstrators filled the streets surrounding the Tampa Convention Center, where the multi-day conference was underway, chanting slogans like “No fear, no hate, no ICE in our state” and “TPD, KKK, ICE – they’re all the same.”
At one point, tensions escalated between the demonstrators and conference attendees, prompting the Tampa Police Department (TPD) to intervene. A minor clash left one protester bloodied before officers restored order.
The high-profile conservative gathering featured speakers including TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, border security chief Tom Homan, and Donald Trump Jr.
Protesters Push Back on Trump-Era Immigration Policies
The protest was organized by Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and supported by local Indivisible chapters. Organizers said their goal was to confront what they called “youth indoctrination” and an “extremist agenda” they claim Turning Point USA spreads across campuses.
Many signs and chants targeted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). One large banner read “No ICE on campus!”, while others linked Trump’s deportation policies to broader civil rights concerns, with signs reading “Due Process”, “Free Palestine”, and “Reject White Nationalism.”
A protester hoisting a massive mock toilet paper roll emblazoned with the phrase “TP for the USA – When history gets messy, FLUSH IT” drew attention online, trolling the TPUSA acronym.
Diverse Demonstration Turns Chaotic
While most of the demonstration remained peaceful, shouting matches erupted when summit attendees countered the chants with “USA! USA!” One protester reportedly suffered a minor injury during a brief skirmish before police broke it up.
Demonstrators also criticized the summit’s platform as an attack on LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, and academic freedom. The protest flier listed demands to “defend public education,” “end deportations,” and “cut U.S. aid to apartheid.”
Aftermath and Broader Context
The protest follows recent anti-ICE demonstrations nationwide, including last month’s unrest in Los Angeles. Activists say the Biden-to-Trump transition on immigration enforcement has fueled renewed anger, particularly as Trump doubles down on ICE raids and deportation initiatives.
After confronting summit attendees, protesters marched toward City Hall, where speeches continued into the evening.
While Turning Point USA has not yet commented on the protest, event organizers said attendance at this year’s summit exceeded expectations, and security was increased due to anticipated demonstrations.
