Taylor Swift Finally Reveals Who Set Her Up with Travis Kelce After His ‘Earnest’ Gesture

Taylor Swift’s Disney+ docuseries has shed new light on how her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce first got moving — and it turns out her mom, Andrea Swift, had a key assist from a trusted source in the family.

In episode four of Taylor Swift: The End of an Era, titled “Thank You for the Lovely Bouquet,” which dropped Friday, Dec. 19, Taylor, 36, and Andrea shared the moment Kelce, 36, first landed on Andrea’s radar.

“I’m looking at the headlines and perusing around on the Internet and I see that this guy came to your show and he brought a friendship bracelet and wants to meet you,” Andrea recalled. Curious, she reached out to her go-to Chiefs expert: her cousin Robin.

“So I call up my resident expert on the Kansas City Chiefs, my cousin Robin, and I go, ‘Tell me about this guy named Travis Kelce,’ ” Andrea said.

Robin’s reaction, Andrea explained, instantly stood out.

“She goes, ‘Oh my God, he is the nicest guy! And he really loves his mom.’ And I went, ‘Ding, ding, ding, ding,’ ” Andrea said with a laugh. “And then I said, ‘Now, how in the world am I going to get her to meet him?’ ”

Taylor admitted the idea wasn’t an obvious fit at first. She described herself as previously being “very non-athlete” and wondered what the two of them would even talk about on a date.

“So you call me with this tone of, ‘Hey, I know you’re not gonna react well to this, but there’s a guy…’ ” Taylor said, referring to her mom’s approach.

“He’s really cute!” Andrea jumped in.

Taylor laughed, adding that Andrea urged her to shake up her routine: “You said something to the effect of, ‘You gotta start doing something different.’ ”

Andrea also called Kelce’s friendship bracelet gesture “so earnest” and “the sweetest thing,” noting how meaningful it felt that he showed up with something rooted in Taylor’s world.

“To me that really said a lot. So I thought that was really sweet and I liked it,” Andrea said.

Taylor said Kelce even had to “explain football” to her on their first date — which she described as “violent chess.” But the learning curve didn’t last long.

“Then I became obsessed with him and therefore became obsessed with learning about football — greatest surprise of my life,” she said.

As the relationship grew, both Taylor and Andrea reflected on how much joy Kelce brought into Taylor’s life. Taylor referenced going through “two breakups on the first half of this tour,” pointing to her splits from Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy.

Later, recalling Kelce joining her onstage during her London show in June 2024, Taylor called him someone who’s enthusiastic about life — and game for just about anything.

“Travis, he’s a real yes guy, in terms of life itself. He’s just up for anything,” she said.

She also noted how naturally he thrives in big moments.

“The way that he just comes to life when the lights are the brightest. People talk about that all the time with him,” she said. “They’re like, ‘The moment’s never too big for Travis, the lights are never too bright for Travis,’ ” calling him “so magically entertaining.”

Andrea echoed the sentiment, describing him as “one of the happiest people” she’s ever met.

“He just brought a lot of happiness, which is, I think, what he does in a lot of his circles,” she said. “He brings a lot of happiness to the room.”

Taylor ended the episode with a joke about how unexpected their origin story still feels to her.

“If you ever would have ever told me that the most meaningful relationship I would ever have would start with a man saying he was ‘butt hurt’ that I didn’t want to meet him, unbelievable,” she said.

Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in August, sharing the news in a joint Instagram post with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨.”
