Taylor Swift’s fashion choice has once again made waves—this time for ocean conservation.
The 35-year-old artist was spotted wearing a 1990s-era otter T-shirt from California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium during the filming of The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. The shirt’s cameo in the final cut didn’t just charm fans—it fueled a tidal wave of donations to the aquarium.
According to KSBW, after the premiere aired, the aquarium noticed a sudden surge in contributions—many arriving in $13 increments, a nod to Swift’s well-known lucky number. Interest also spiked in the retired otter T-shirt design.
To celebrate Swift’s new Life of a Showgirl album and her support for the aquarium, the Monterey Bay Aquarium relaunched the vintage otter T-shirt through a fundraiser aiming for $1.3 million—another wink to Swift’s signature number.
“We’re saying thank you to all the eagle-eyed fans out there with a re-release of our vintage Monterey Bay Aquarium sea otter t-shirt,” the aquarium shared in the fundraiser description. “We tracked down the original artwork—first printed in the 1990s—and are bringing it back, sustainably. For a limited time, we’re running a special campaign to support our Sea Otter Program and other critical ocean conservation work.”
The campaign’s response was overwhelming. Within just seven hours of its launch on Oct. 16, it reached the $1.3 million goal. By the following day, Oct. 17, donations had soared past $2.2 million.

Fans—whether Swifties, otter enthusiasts, or both—can still secure one of the limited-edition shirts with a minimum donation of $65.13. Due to high demand, delivery may take longer than expected.

The design showcases two otters floating side by side, surrounded by small info boxes listing their “stats” and favorite foods. A strand of kelp—a nod to how otters wrap themselves while resting—adds an aesthetic touch, with the sea otter’s scientific name printed above.

To recreate the design, the aquarium partnered with Liberty Graphics, which has ties to the shirt’s original producer, Harborside Designs. The updated version uses PVC-free, water-based ink on 100% cotton, reflecting the aquarium’s commitment to sustainability.
The sturdy construction of the original 1990s shirt, which has held up for over 30 years, stands as an “anti–fast fashion statement,” the aquarium noted.
