A Tennessee teacher made history when she set aside her chalk for the final time, retiring after more than six decades in the same classroom.
Glenda Akin officially broke the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a female teacher at the same school on Sept. 13, 2024, according to Guinness World Records. She spent an extraordinary 61 years and 43 days teaching at Westmoreland High School in Westmoreland, Tennessee, before retiring.
Akin began her career at the Sumner County school in 1963, serving students as both a social studies teacher and a librarian. Over the decades, she became a familiar and influential presence for generations of students.
Westmoreland High School marked the milestone in a Facebook post shared on Dec. 19, featuring photos of Akin being honored on campus while holding her official Guinness certificate.
“Historic Achievement at Westmoreland High School!” the school wrote. “We are incredibly proud to announce that Ms. Glenda Akin has officially been awarded a Guinness World Record for the Longest Career as a Female Teacher in the Same School!”

The post continued, “With an extraordinary 61 years and 43 days of dedicated service at Westmoreland High School, Ms. Akin’s lifelong commitment to education has shaped generations of students and left an unforgettable legacy in our school and community.”
Although Akin will no longer be walking the halls during the school day, her impact will remain a permanent part of the campus. The school honored her by dedicating its library in her name, now officially called the Glenda Akin Library.
A plaque displayed inside the library commemorates her career, noting that her six decades of service to the school and community will remain forever cherished in the lives of her coworkers and students.
