An animal rescue program in Austin, Texas, helped care for a man’s beloved cat during a tough period in his life — and now the two are back together.

According to Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), on July 24, Jake was struggling with housing insecurity and mental health challenges. Feeling he couldn’t give his cat, Rocky, the care he deserved, Jake went to APA! planning to surrender him permanently so the cat would be safe.

“Jake was determined to do whatever he needed to ensure that Rocky was safe and cared for, even if that meant saying goodbye forever,” APA! shared in a Sept. 3 Instagram post.

Thankfully, Jake didn’t have to lose Rocky for good. Instead, the rescue’s Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) program stepped in. PASS is designed to help families stay connected to their pets whenever possible. The program provides things like pet food assistance, affordable veterinary resources, and foster care options.

For Rocky, PASS arranged a “safety net foster home,” where he stayed until Jake felt ready to take care of him again.

“Knowing Rocky was safe gave Jake the peace of mind he needed to focus on himself and take steps toward stability,” APA! said.

After about a month, Rocky received updated vaccinations and was reunited with Jake. APA! shared photos of their emotional reunion on Instagram, showing Jake holding Rocky close after opening his carrier.

“Their story is a beautiful reminder of the human-animal bond — and proof that when a community comes together, small acts of kindness can change lives in the most meaningful ways,” APA! wrote.

According to APA, the PASS program helps about 500–700 cases each month by offering a “safe, judgment-free zone for anyone in need.”
