After a dog was abandoned at an airport by its owner, thousands of people from around the world applied to adopt him.

The dog, described as an approximately two-year-old Goldendoodle or Mini Poodle mix, gained widespread attention on social media. The story went viral after the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) shared details of the incident, along with video footage, in a February 18 news release.

According to authorities, the owner, whose identity was not disclosed, left the dog tied to a baggage sizer at the JetBlue ticket counter at Harry Reid International Airport in Paradise, Nevada. The incident occurred late at night on February 2, and police officers responded to the scene at around 11:39 p.m.

Police stated that airline staff informed the owner she needed to complete online documentation to travel with the animal as a service dog. When the required paperwork was not completed, she was denied a boarding pass.

Authorities reported that the woman then left the dog behind and proceeded through the airport toward the departure gate.

Officers later located the owner at a gate inside the airport and confronted her about the situation. In body camera footage released by the LVMPD, the woman appeared visibly upset.

“I’m going to throw my bags down because I’m exhausted,” she said. An officer responded by explaining that she would be escorted back to the ticket counter and issued a citation for leaving the dog behind.

When asked why she abandoned the animal, the woman claimed JetBlue would not allow her to fly with the dog. She also mentioned that the dog had a tracking device, suggesting she believed it would find its way back to her. Police reported that she later became hostile during the interaction.

The woman was arrested and charged with animal abandonment and resisting arrest.

Meanwhile, the dog — later named JetBlue — was taken into the care of Animal Protective Services. After ten days without any contact from the owner, the dog was transferred to Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas, a local nonprofit organization.

As JetBlue’s story spread online, the rescue organization reported receiving an overwhelming response.

“This sweet boy is incredible,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook update. “After everything he has experienced, we will be extremely careful in selecting his forever family. He deserves stability, security, and a lifetime commitment.”

JetBlue received more than 2,400 adoption applications from people across the globe. However, he will be adopted by one of the police officers who responded to the incident.

The officer had already completed a pre-approved application and home check with the rescue organization. Reports indicate the dog will join the officer’s family.

Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas encouraged those who applied to consider adopting other animals in need. The organization noted that many dogs are still waiting for permanent homes.

“There is only one JetBlue,” the rescue said, “but there are many others who also need loving families.”
