A tourist was stabbed multiple times inside Macy’s flagship store in Manhattan during the height of the holiday shopping season.
Officers with the New York Police Department responded to Macy’s Herald Square on Thursday, Dec. 11, following a report of an assault, police confirmed.
The victim is a 39-year-old woman whose identity has not been released. Authorities said she suffered several stab wounds to her back along with a laceration on her left arm. She was transported to a nearby hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Police arrested 43-year-old Kerri Aherne in connection with the incident.
According to a report by FOX 5 NY, citing unnamed law enforcement sources, the woman was visiting from California and was changing her baby in a bathroom when Aherne allegedly entered and began stabbing her. The attack was described as unprovoked.
It was not immediately clear whether the baby was injured during the incident.
Police did not provide additional details when asked for further comment.
Aherne, who is from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, was charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and child endangerment, according to police.
Court records available online did not indicate whether Aherne has retained legal representation as of Friday afternoon.
Macy’s said in a statement that it was “deeply saddened” by the incident and emphasized that the safety of customers and employees remains its top priority.
