Tristan Rogers, the Australian actor best known for playing Robert Scorpio on General Hospital, has died at the age of 79. He first joined the soap opera in 1980 and quickly became one of its most popular stars.
His longtime manager, Meryl Soodak, confirmed his death to ABC 7 Eyewitness News on Friday, August 15. In July, it was revealed that Rogers had been diagnosed with cancer.
Soodak said that playing Robert Scorpio “meant everything to him.” She added, “He loved being Scorpio and he created that role from nothing. He was supposed to work one day, but it turned into something huge. He was a loyal, kind person who loved his family.”
General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini also shared a statement with PEOPLE, saying, “The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers’ passing. Tristan captivated our fans for 45 years, and Port Charles will not be the same without him. He was a one-of-a-kind talent and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.”

Early Life and Career
Rogers was born in Melbourne in 1946. He left school in 1964, started a rock band, and later worked as a model and in commercials. At 21, he decided to become an actor, even though he had no training. “As far as I was concerned, it was a way to make a bit of money. That’s all,” he told Soap.com in 2022.
He appeared in Australian shows like Bellbird, Number 96 (1974), and The Box (1975). He also acted in British films, including 1972’s Four Dimensions of Greta.
In 1980, Rogers moved to the U.S. and soon after was cast as Robert Scorpio on General Hospital. His character was a spy for the World Security Bureau, later becoming Port Charles’ police commissioner and district attorney. Robert’s close friendship with Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) made him part of the famous 1981 wedding of Luke and Laura (Genie Francis), which drew 30 million viewers — still the most-watched soap opera episode in U.S. history.
A Soap Opera Legend
At first, Rogers didn’t realize how big the show was. “It was just one more job for me,” he told Soap Opera Digest in 2020. “But then I saw how huge it was. I got swept away by the General Hospital tidal wave.”
Robert Scorpio became a fan favorite. Though the character was killed off in 1992, Rogers returned in 2006, proving how beloved the role was. “I think this character will follow me to my grave,” he told The New York Times.
He made recurring appearances through the years, most recently since 2019. In 2008, Rogers also reprised the role in General Hospital: Night Shift, where Robert battled colon cancer. “Characters like mine don’t get colon cancer,” Rogers told Entertainment Weekly. “I thought it was a real challenge, and maybe it inspired people to get tested.”
In a 2011 interview for the book The Survival of Soap Opera, Rogers reflected on the genre’s future: “This is not a genre that will be around in another 50 years. They’ve made their mark, and almost every type of medium owes something to soaps.”
Work Beyond General Hospital
Rogers also appeared on The Young and the Restless (2010–2011), Fast Track, and Babylon 5. He did voice work in Disney’s The Rescuers Down Under (1990) and won a Daytime Emmy for the 2019–2020 Prime Video series Studio City.
Personal Life
Rogers married Barbra Meale in 1974, but they divorced in 1984. He later dated his General Hospital co-star Emma Samms, but they split in 1985. In 1995, he married Teresa Parkerson, and together they had two children, Sara and Cale.
Rogers is survived by his wife Teresa and their children.
