Trump Border Czar’s Remarks Shift From Kristi Noem’s Stance on ICE Shooting

Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s border czar, said it would be “unprofessional” to offer his personal take on what happened in the deadly Minneapolis shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.

Why It Matters

The death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an ICE operation in Minnesota’s Twin Cities area has sparked protests, political fallout, and an intensifying argument over federal immigration enforcement and the conduct of agents operating in U.S. communities.

The incident is also fueling broader scrutiny as the Trump administration presses forward with an aggressive immigration enforcement agenda, placing new attention on how federal operations unfold in major cities.

What to Know

The shooting happened Wednesday during an ICE operation in a residential neighborhood in Minneapolis. Video footage shows Good in an SUV stopped on the roadway as federal vehicles approached. After agents confronted her and ordered her out of the vehicle, she appears to reverse and then pull forward. As the SUV moved ahead, one agent fired multiple shots through the window, killing her.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Secretary Kristi Noem quickly described the incident as “domestic terrorism,” saying Good attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon against federal agents and that the officer’s use of lethal force was self-defense. Noem said at a news conference that Good had been harassing officers and was “attempting to run [ICE agents] over and ram them with her vehicle” before she was shot. She also said the involved officer was struck by the vehicle, treated at a hospital, and released.

In an interview with CBS News, Homan was asked about the video and said the investigation is still in its early stages.

“I’m not gonna make a judgment call on one video when there’s a hundred videos out there. I wasn’t on the scene, I’m not an officer that may have bodycam video. It’d be unprofessional to comment on what I think happened in that situation. Let the investigation play out and hold people accountable based on the investigation,” Homan said.

When CBS News host Tony Dokoupil pressed him on how Noem could so quickly label the incident “domestic terrorism,” Homan declined to weigh in.

“That’s a question for Homeland Security. I’m the border czar,” he said.

He added that it is premature to draw conclusions without giving investigators time to review all available video, interview witnesses, and speak with the officers involved.

“It’s a process we must go through,” Homan said.

What People Are Saying

Trump, on Truth Social: “I have just viewed the clip of the event which took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a horrible thing to watch. The woman screaming was, obviously, a professional agitator, and the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense.

“Based on the attached clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital. The situation is being studied, in its entirety, but the reason these incidents are happening is because the Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis. They are just trying to do the job of MAKING AMERICA SAFE. We need to stand by and protect our Law Enforcement Officers from this Radical Left Movement of Violence and Hate!”

Vice President JD Vance, on X Wednesday: “I want every ICE officer to know that their president, vice president, and the entire administration stands behind them. To the radicals assaulting them, doxxing them, and threatening them: congratulations, we’re going to work even harder to enforce the law.”

Democratic U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, on X Wednesday: “Kristi Noem is a stone-cold liar who has zero credibility. There is nothing to suggest the shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis was justified. This heinous killing must be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law.”

What Happens Next

Federal officials have not announced any immediate changes to ICE operations in the Twin Cities. Meanwhile, local and state leaders continue calling for the agency to withdraw and for stronger oversight and accountability as investigations proceed.
