WASHINGTON — U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has agreed to testify voluntarily before the House Oversight Committee following intensifying scrutiny over his past associations with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The decision, first reported by Axios, comes as newly released documents appear to contradict Lutnick’s previous public statements regarding the timeline and nature of his relationship with the late financier.

“I look forward to appearing before the committee,” Lutnick told reporters. “I have done nothing wrong and I want to set the record straight.”

Shifting Narratives and Documented Contacts

The controversy centers on a series of inconsistencies between Lutnick’s public interviews and Justice Department files released earlier this year.

In an October interview on Pod Force One, Lutnick claimed he and his wife severed all ties with Epstein in 2005 after a “gross” encounter involving a massage table during a house tour. He stated at the time, “I was never in the room with him socially, for business, or even philanthropy.”

However, federal records suggest a different timeline:

  • 2012 Island Visit: Documents indicate Lutnick coordinated a trip to Epstein’s private Caribbean island, Little St. James, four years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor.
  • Email Correspondence: While Lutnick previously minimized their contact, he recently admitted during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing that approximately 10 emails exist connecting the two over a 14-year period.
  • Family Excursion: Lutnick later clarified that the 2012 visit was a one-hour lunch stop during a family boat vacation, accompanied by his wife, children, nannies, and another couple.

Bipartisan Pressure and Calls for Resignation

The discrepancy in Lutnick’s account has drawn fire from both sides of the aisle. During a February 10 hearing, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) questioned the Secretary’s “inconsistent messaging,” forcing the admission regarding the 2012 island visit.

The fallout has also reached the Republican ranks. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) called for Lutnick’s resignation during a CNN appearance, arguing that the Secretary’s presence in the Cabinet has become a liability for the administration.

“Howard Lutnick clearly went to the island… many years after Jeffrey Epstein was convicted,” Massie said. “He should make life easier on the president, frankly, and just resign.”

The Political Context: Clinton and the White House

The House Oversight Committee’s interest in Lutnick intensified after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was deposed by the same committee on February 26, 2026. During her testimony, Clinton was questioned about her own connections to Epstein, leading to public debate over why a private citizen was being subpoenaed while a sitting Cabinet member had not yet faced the same formal inquiry.

Despite the mounting pressure, President Donald Trump has remained steadfast in his support of the Commerce Secretary.

“Howard would go in and do whatever he has to say. He’s a very innocent guy — doing a good job,” the President stated.

White House spokesman Kush Desai echoed this sentiment, describing Lutnick as a “critical asset” who remains focused on trade and investment deals for the American people.

What’s Next

The House Oversight Committee has not yet released the official date for Lutnick’s testimony. The hearing is expected to focus on the full extent of Lutnick’s business and social ties to Epstein and whether any of those interactions influenced his current role in the federal government.
